Andrei Baciu, after the UN meeting: “AI is no longer the future, it’s already the present”

Andrei Baciu, member of the Romanian Parliament and Vice-Chair of the Committee on Defense, Public Order, and National Security, as well as the initiator of the Committee on Artificial Intelligence, met last week at United Nations headquarters with Amandeep Singh Gill, the UN Deputy Secretary-General, to discuss the impact of artificial intelligence and the need for global governance in this field.

Following the meeting, he emphasized that AI can no longer be treated as an emerging technology, but rather as a reality that is already influencing the fundamental structures of society.

“Artificial intelligence is no longer an experiment. It is the invisible infrastructure that is beginning to shape every major system in society,” Baciu stated.

According to him, AI has a direct impact on key areas such as the labor market, business models, financial markets, and even democratic processes, changing the way decisions are made and power is distributed in society.

The MP pointed out that this transformation comes with a major responsibility for leaders in the public and private sectors, especially given that the rules established today will define the architecture of the future.

“Those who write the rules for AI today are, in fact, defining the architecture of tomorrow’s power,” he emphasized.

In this context, Baciu highlighted recent international initiatives on AI governance, including the launch of a global dialogue at the UN and the drafting of the first global expert report. At the national level, he reiterated the proposal to establish a committee dedicated to artificial intelligence within the Romanian Parliament, as part of efforts to adapt to new technological realities.
